 | Giraffes at the African Rift Valley in the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo | The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is America’s only mountain zoo located in the United States featuring over 750 animals representing approximately 143 species, 35 of which are endangered from around the world. The zoo was founded in 1926 by Spencer Penrose to house his collection of exotic animals and was deeded in 1938 as a non-profit public trust for the people of Colorado Springs. The mission of the trust is to provide recreation, education, conservation and scientific research in the field of zoology and related subjects. The Zoo is one of a handful of accredited zoos in the nation that operates without local tax support, depending on admissions, membership dues, donations and grants for funding Two male baby giraffes born March 25, 2010 and are the newest memebers to the zoo. One more birth is expected this spring. Western Lowland Gorilla Baby “Tumani” born January 31, 2007 and the new baby orangutan born April 4th 2007. Visit Tumani at Primate World 9 am to 5 pm and baby orangutan will be available for viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily in the Primate World building.(Primate World remains open daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) The African Rift Valley exhibit allows visitors up-close animal encounters and interactive learning experiences. Hand feed the zoological park’s world-renowned giraffe herd – the largest of any zoo in the world with over 20 giraffes in the heard. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Hours: 9 am - 6m Summer Months (Memorial Day weekent to Labor Day) 9 am - 5 pm All other months Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day the Zoo closes at 4 pm with last gate admission at 3 pm.
